Children

The Wellbeing of Children is our main reason for being!!

Traditionally children in rural areas of Tamil Nadu are educationally under-privileged. The illiteracy rate among adults in local villages is 70 -80%.

Truancy - drop out - is a major problem in this area. Some of the reasons are:

  • Lack of parental support or involvement.
  • Lack of money to buy necessary uniforms and school supplies.
  • Lack of motivation.
  • Child labour, caring for youger siblings when their parents at work; labouring in the fields or tending farm animals.
  • Drought, resulting in migration of one or both parents.
  • Malnutrition

To combat this SPPD:

  • Provides Evening Study  Centre (ESC)  in 20 villages, tutoring over 700 children ;
  • Teaches, houses, clothes and feeds 24 children (aged  6 - 18) who have lost proper educational opportunities.
  • Supports caregivers through Women's Self-Help Groups  ; and Farmers' Clubs.
  • Provides financial support for the education of 60 children through its Non - Residential Educational Scheme.
