Community Centre

The SPPD Community Centre is a building of the 21st century. It has attracted interest from academic institutions such as Periyar Polytechnic whose architectural students visited to research its architectural design and eco-friendly construction with a view to a “Building Green” future.  The Centre has also been visited by students of architecture from the National Institute of Technology, Trichy (NIT).  Additionally, in 2005, the Indian national daily, The Hindu, devoted an entire article to the energy-saving and cost effective techniques used in it's construction.

Constructed in 2002/2003 SPPD's Community Centre features:

  • Exclusive use of local clay for the bricks, handmade by men and women from the community
  • Power cables encased in locally sourced bamboo
  • Minimal use of concrete
  • Tall windows to maximize daylight penetration and thereby economise on electricity.
  • Good use of shade and cooling airflows – no A/C, also to minimize  the usage of electricity.
  • Large roof-top rainwater harvesting system
  • Centralized natural water purifying  system.

The Community Centre is the hub of all SPPDs activities and contains:

  • SPPD Children’s Home
  • Office space with computer and internet facility
  • Spacious conference hall with a seating capacity of 100
  • Four spacious and airy bedrooms with balconies and en suite bathrooms with western style toilets.
  • In-house catering facility and dining hall serving south Indian food.
