This scheme – the first of our initiatives – aims to provide supplementary education to children in rural villages in order to bring them up to an academic level where they can compete with children from urban areas when they reach 8th Standard (at age 13). Secondary schools are in urban or semi-urban areas and without supplemental help, the leap from village school to secondary school often results in truancy and depression.
At present SPPD's programme caters to 720 children in 20 centres in 20 different villages where the curriculum covers:
Reinforcement tuition of academic syllabus Environmental awareness Tuition in life skills such as personal hygiene Local, regional and national history and culture Yoga, exercise and an annual sports day
Teacher Training The 20 evening study centre teachers, meet twice monthly with the programme coordinators at the Community Centre to review the past 15 days and discuss the syllabus for the following two weeks, and other relevant issues. Classes meet 6 days a week in the local village schools or in local meeting areas such as temple yards.
At present this programme is primarily funded by the Joe Homan Charity (JHC),UK which covers the cost of employing the 20 teachers, a field staff and a programme coordinator. JHC also covers the cost of providing school uniforms, foot wear, books, sports material, health check up,field trip and daily nutritional supplement.
