Transforming Futures: How SPPD Empowers Poor Children and Single Mothers Through Nutrition and Care
Introduction
Children are the heartbeat of our future. Yet, thousands suffer in silence due to hunger, malnutrition, neglect, and social vulnerability. In Tamil Nadu, many children belonging to marginalized groups such as single-mother households, HIV-infected/infected parents, physically challenged, and orphans face severe nutritional insecurity and mental stress.
With the support of our generous donor, the "Hungry Child" project was initiated to address these critical issues and ensure every child has the right to grow healthy, educated, and happy.
The Hungry Child project aimed to support 1300 children between 3 and 18 years of age with monthly nutritional supplements to combat malnutrition, support physical and mental health, reduce school dropout rates, and promote overall well-being.
Target Group
The beneficiaries were selected based on vulnerability and need, with a clear focus on:
- Children of single women
- Children infected/affected by HIV/AIDS
- Orphans
- Physically challenged children
Of the 1300 children supported:
- 60% were girls (780 children)
- 40% were boys (520 children)
This gender-sensitive approach also contributed to promoting girl child health and education.
Key Activities
Monthly Nutritional Supplement Distribution
From September 2024 to May 2025, nutritional kits were distributed every month. Each child received:
- Dates – 500 grams
- Health Drink Powder – 500 grams
- Chickpea (Kabuli Chana) – 1 kg
- Green Gram (Moong Dal) – 1 kg
- Red Gram (Toor Dal) – 1 kg
- White Chana (Desi Chana) – 1 kg
- Ragi Flour (Finger Millet) – 1.5 kg
- Mixed Dals – 2 kg
These items were chosen based on local nutritional needs, availability, and cultural acceptability.
Health and Nutrition Awareness Sessions
To ensure maximum benefit, community volunteers and health workers conducted basic awareness sessions for caregivers and older children on:
- How to cook and consume these items effectively
- Importance of balanced meals
- Hygiene and hand-washing practices
These sessions helped families make better use of the food provided.
Impact Achieved
The project had significant impact on the physical, emotional, and social well-being of the children. Highlights include:
1. Improvement in Physical Health
- Weight and height monitoring (done quarterly) showed noticeable improvements in undernourished children.
- Cases of fatigue, skin infections, and other signs of micronutrient deficiency reduced by over 40%.
- Children displayed better immunity and energy levels.
2. Mental and Emotional Well-being
- Children exhibited improved mood, better sleep, and more regular school attendance.
- Teachers and caregivers observed more cheerful, energetic behavior, a sign of better nourishment and care.
3. Educational Outcomes
- School attendance increased by 30% among the children who were previously irregular or at risk of dropping out.
- Focused nutritional support motivated caregivers to ensure their children stayed enrolled.
- Children expressed happiness and gratitude, referring to the kits as “health boosters†and “school supportâ€.
4. Empowerment of Single Mothers and Guardians
- Single women caregivers felt supported and empowered, reducing their emotional and financial stress.
- HIV-affected families expressed reduced stigma due to project inclusion.
